Recently throughout Taiwan, the number of multi-functional “Artist Villages” has been increasing. This new platform for artistic exchange through national and international residency programs benefits not only the artists involved, but also the communities hosting such Villages. These Artist Villages make themselves available to the local communities through workshops, open studios, public exhibitions, performances and volunteer opportunities. The establishment of these effective artist residency programs is often a mutually beneficial collaboration between government cultural agencies, community schools and grassroots organiations. In addition, many Artist Villages have won praise for their innovative revitalization of abandoned buildings thus further strengthening the communities in which they exist. TAVA is the only national service organization dedicated to artists and artistic communities.
